Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink?

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Friday, October 17, 2008 staff and students at Zone Township Central School participated in an "Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink" day.  Both staff and students were asked to wear anything pink in support of Zone's grade one teacher, Mrs. Oxford who has recently undergone surgery for breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets were sold for a minimum donation of $2.00 and students sold raffle tickets on a pink Wrangler shirt.  The draw for the shirt was held on Friday, October 17th.  Bits and Buckles Tack shop in Rutherford graciously donated the shirt to the school to promote awareness and prevention of breast cancer.

Profits from the bracelets and shirt will be presented to Mrs. Oxford to help offset medical expenses and also for cancer research.

Also, on Friday, October 17th, a grade 4 student volunteered to get her hair cut for the "Angel Hair for Kids Program"

"Angel Hair for Kids" is a program of a Child's Voice Foundation that provides wigs and hair loss solutions to children who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment such as Cancer chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Using hair that is generously donated to the program, Angel Hair for Kids can create wigs and hair systems and provide them to children in need at no cost to their families.  Since its inception three years ago the program has provided wig systems at no charge to over 150 children and the demand is steadily increasing.

Angel Hair for Kids accepts hair donations under the following guidelines:

  • Hair must be at least 10 inches / 25 cm (pull curly hair straight before cutting).
  • Hair must be clean and completely dry.
  • Braid hair and secure at both ends, cut above the elastic.  Use as many ponytails or braids as necessary for haircut.
  • Wrap hair in tissue and place in a bag; include contact information for a certificate of appreciation.

It takes 10-12 donated ponytails to make one wig or hair prosthesis and $800.00 per system is budgeted by the foundation to cover manufacturing costs.  Angel Hair for Kids welcomes both hair and financial donations.
