REWARD / CONSEQUENCE PROGRAM
(for grade 6,7,8 students)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

  1. Each student will begin the school day with a clean slate.  Throughout the day, behaviour consistent with the expectations noted above will be monitored by classroom and duty staff.
  2. The following behaviour by students will be considered as a failure to comply with required behaviour:

    1. being rude or disrespectful to others;
    2. disrupting the class or creating a disturbance which disrupts the learning environment;
    3. non-compliant behaviour with staff;
    4. being unprepared for class (including homework, supplies);
    5. wasting instructional time by not working in class

  3. In the event a student incurs an infraction, the following will occur:

    1. the student will be informed that an infraction has been recorded in the tracking book which will be carried to each class;
    2. the infraction will be noted using the following code:
                          R - rude or disrespectful behaviour
                          D - disruptive behaviour
                          N - non-compliance
                          U - unprepared for class
                          W - wasting instructional time
    3. a record slip, requiring parent initials, will be placed in the student's planner;
    4. if the infraction warrants additional action, a 5 to 10 minute "time out" may be given by the classroom teacher.  The student is expected to quietly and without argument leave the room and wait quietly in the hallway outside of the classroom until the staff member re-admits the student to class.;
    5. if the infraction is deemed to be serious, a student may be sent to the School Office for further intervention by the Principal.

  4. If a student receives a third entry within one school day, he/she will be reminded that it is their third infraction.
  5. If a student receives 3 or less entries in the tracking book in one day, no further action is required.  Entries will, however, be tracked on an on-going basis to determine which students will qualify for the reward which occurs at the end of the 4 to 6 week period.  This tracking system will also be considered for other activities, such as school trips.
  6. If a student receives 4 entries in a single day, a negative consequence will be applied as detailed below.
  7. Once a letter has been recorded it cannot be "earned off".

REWARDS

  1. Students with an average of two or less infractions per week over the 4 to 6 week period will qualify for a group-oriented reward provided by the staff and the Office.

  2. Student input will be collected through the School Spirit Committee to determine possible rewards.

CONSEQUENCES

  1. Students who exceed the criteria for average infractions will not be permitted to participate in the group reward.  These students will remain in class and will be assigned appropriate classroom activities for completion during the time that the other students are participating in the group reward.

  2. Students who accumulate four infractions in one school day have been provided with ample opportunity to correct inappropriate behaviour and are not exercising the self-discipline expected.  In this case, a negative consequence which escalates in severity with each occasion will be applied.

    1. First Occasion - parental letter of warning and a 1 hour after school detention.

    2. Second Occasion - removal from class for the remainder of the day and a one day in-school suspension on the following school day.

    3. Third Occasion - removal from class for the remainder of the day and a one day out of school suspension on the following school day.  A parent interview to be scheduled to discuss and develop a corrective action plan prior to re-admission.

    4. Further Occurrences - during the development of the corrective action plan, consequences of a more severe nature will be addressed.
